Volunteerism

So, if you know me, you know what a freak I am for technology. But, I try to keep that on the down low, cause when people find out, well all of a sudden they have a new tech to help them solve all of their computing problems. And I do not mind helping, not really, but there is a very fine line between lending a hand and "hey, you need to pay me for this kind of work!"

So I stayed in the closet for 3 years at the job site, before they found out what I can do. This year I am Co-Technology Coordinator (ooooooooo). Any who, our computer lab is a joke. Full of Apple 2Es and only a hand full of IMacs. The site was re-wired last year, which put the lab out of commission. Since then, it has become a dumping ground for things that there is no other place for. So, Spring Break rolls around and I do have to come downtown a couple of nights a week to teach, so I volunteer to see what I can do with the place. NIGHTMARE!

I spend 8 hours just untangling keyboards, cat 5 wires, mice, and other peripherals. I organize the storage and discovered some ancient treasures. Record players, brand new still in the box, after about 20 or 30 years. CRAZY! SO I organize all these items in boxes, labeled and get all the IMacs up and running. It will take at least another 2 or 3 eight hour days to even get close to a working lab, but I am just not willing to put in that kind of effort for free. No one appreciates us as it is, and they are paying for our time. So imagine how little all this effort will be appreciated and it was a freebie?

I think I will just stay home for the rest of my break and try not to think about work...
